Sunday afternoon, Brian and I made our way to Ulah Bistro for the Natural Hair Brunch Affair in DC. Being that I haven't partaken in brunch since it became popular again and have a certain affinity for natural hair, it seemed like a no-brainer. The event, curated carefully by the ladies of Food Before Love and Natural Hair Does Care gave me an experience that blew me away. As I sat down at one of the tables to talk with some of the attendees, I quickly learned that they came from all walks of life. For example, an upcoming senior from Howard may have crossed paths with a carrier of a Doctorate degree with the common ground being their relationship with their hair.
Food Before Love, the creation of Casandra Rosario is becoming the new craze in NY. Her events are an eclectic mix of eating and socialization and can range from speed dating to a brunch on a boat ride. Natural Hair Does Care, which is the brainchild of two sisters, Shalleen-Kaye and Seanna-Kaye, is essentially an online forum whose mission is to inform and inspire through their blog and social media about the benefits of natural hair, care techniques, styling ideas, nutrition and emotional wellness. They have come together on this concept of the "Natural Hair Brunch Affair" to intimately engage with the followers of their brands in healthy dialogue about the things that matter to them most, their hair. The food part is an added bonus, but definitely not an afterthought because it is the connection that brought them together in the first place.
In reflection, I'm going to be honest, I've been following their social media for a while and never knew who was behind it. A friend sent me the event and as time got closer, I began to do research on the entities and found that Natural Hair Does Care had a tremendous following so I sent an email requesting to cover the event. They didn't have to accept me and I figured that it had already been covered so I didn't expect much. They met us with open arms and we thoroughly enjoyed the cuisine and the experience. Inspired by the spots she frequently visits in her "food journey", the menu was handpicked by Casandra. And with a name like Food Before Love, how could not follow her lead? Shalleen and Seanna served as our guides through enlightening conversation about natural hair, topics ranged from how to care for the unique hair type to social understanding of the booming beauty phenomenon. There were giveaways from sponsors and goodies bags for all attendees. If you didn't attend you truly missed out!
