MMG is weird man. On the one end, you have the cinematic, braggadocios, Mafioso soundtrack sound of head honcho Rick Ross that meshes so well with the down and dirty trap life of DMV’s Fat Trel and the energetic boastfulness of the somehow still living corpse of Meek Mill. These three elements fit together wonderfully and complement each other’s hustle. Hell, the same goes for French Montana and Triple C’s. They just fit. However, then we get to the other side of Maybach Music, the side that does not seem to belong. This is Wale and Stalley’s lane, going against traffic to deliver something different. Whether it be poetry on wax or the hard knock life of the underachiever, it’s always a message over smooth production and concise lyricism—Wale’s flirting with the street anthems and strip club joints notwithstanding. Add another to that side with Chicago’s Rockie Fresh.
Rockie, who signed to MMG all the way back in 2012, recently released his newest project, The Night I Went To…, A 12 track EP that he wrote while on tour late last year. Each song has a different feel representing a different city and the vibe he felt while there. A unique and ambitious way of putting a project together. With a helping hand from Chris Brown on “Call Me (When It’s Over)” and Ed Sheeran crooning on standout track “Are You With Me” with a sample and hook taken straight from fellow Brit, Jai Paul’s “Jasmine” that is a certified hit. Check out the EP and tell us how you feel on Rockie’s rise to the forefront of Maybach Music Group.
