New artist are always a treat to listen to, especially when they are just coming into his or her own. Trying on different sounds and subjects to see what fits their current place in life while establishing their signature sound can sometimes be a hazardous road, sometimes it is extremely successful while other times it is marred with failure. However, being there from the beginning allows you to grow with them through all their triumphs and missteps along the way. Almost as if you are taking the journey with them.
That is the feeling I get when I listen to newcomer Jé Marcell’s aptly named Mosaic EP. A bold concoction of Baroque Pop, Jazz and Old School dance flavored with EDM, 90’s and contemporary R&B that somehow gels to create a unique and fun sound that plays to the Anchorage native—yes, Anchorage, Alaska… yes, that Alaska—strengths. No two songs are alike each giving you a taste of her strengths with each genre bending eargasm.
Stand out single, "Be Your Girl" sounds like it was snatched right from the 90’s Techno scene in all of its grandeur and given a facelift, I half expected Technotronic—dating myself—to pop up on the song at times. Yet, even with the updated sound, it still evokes the fun of the times and you can’t help but find yourself needing to get up and dance. Another album highlight, "The Portrait", slows down the pace with an introspective ballad that evokes an almost Vanessa Williams approach á la, "Save the Best for Last" in that it showcases the power of her voice and the ability to convey so much emotion with her soft timbre being only accompanied by soft piano strokes. It is the perfect way to end an album that displays such variety in such a small sampling. Jé Marcell may be just beginning in her journey but this much is certain, whatever path she takes will be one filled with fun and success.
